Body piercings and tattoos are a common way to express oneself. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have at least one tattoo or piercing on their body. Many people get them for many different reasons, their reasons just as different from each other as the piercing they have. There are also many types of body piercings. When a person chooses to get a body piercing, they are making a big decision. They have often thought out the decision greatly and have decided to go through with it. The same thought process goes for someone who chooses to help others to individualize and express themselves, by becoming a piercing artist.

Most people who learn how to body pierce are doing it as a type of passion for the work of body art. Many people who wish to learn how to body pierce are also interested in the art of tattooing as well. Both types of arts take a lot of instruction and a lot of practice. Because there are so many types of body piercings, the body piercing professional must learn each one. They must learn the different methods and the different routines of care and piercing. They must also learn what warning signs to look for and be able to tell their clients how to properly clean their new piercings.

Body piercings are so common that you probably know at least one or two people who have them in places besides their ears. In 2010, 23% of respondents aged 18 to 29 said they had a piercing in a place other than their earlobe. The naval seems to be the most popular piercing outside of the ears. The naval is the most popular piercing location for women, with 33% of surveyed women having a naval piercing. The nose (19%), in the ear other than the lobe (13%), tongue (9.5%), nipple (9%), eyebrow (8%), and lip (4%) are the next most popular.

People are even getting piercings younger than ever. A prevalence of 27% for body piercing and 8% for tattooing is observed among high school students. Many parents are allowing their teenage children to experiment with piercings over tattoos. Tattoos are permanent and cannot be removed as easily as the child grows older and their tastes and interests change. A piercing can simply be taken out, and the piercing will close up over time. With all of the different types of body piercings available, a person interested in becoming a body piercer may have to take on a body piercing apprenticeship.

They will receive an instructional body piercing apprenticeship, which this instruction teaches them all of the necessary points of body piercings. They will also learn about the different body piercing types.
